Poythress, Vern S. The Returning King: A Guide to the Book of Revelation. Phillipsburg, N.J.: P&R, 2000. Targeting laymen audience but also illuminating to scholars, Dr. Poythress guides the readers into the “recapitulated circles” of the end-time history in the Revelation with very synthetic paragraph-by-paragraph commentary. Dr. Poythress teaches the readers to permit the imageries intuitively working in our mind as a child, and focuses on the book’s central message about Jesus’ second coming without being bumped and stopped by the puzzling details. Thus Dr. Poythress offers a fairly “picture-driven” reading of Revelation. His own interpretation of the storyline is thoroughgoing amillennial. His emphasis on the notion of “counterfeit” of the Satanic activities is astoundingly rich and applicable.
